Doesn't the property look like a jungle? There's a lot of wild grape vines. And it's barely springtime. In the summer it gets more jungle-like.
When we first moved here, we explored the small, white, vacated house on the property. One of the upstairs windows was open, and black vultures must have moved in. We didn't know what it was, we only knew that when we attempted to go upstairs in the house, we were greeted by loud hissing. We thought it was a wild cat of some sort! Only, it was obvious from the loudness of the hiss that it wasn't from any ordinary house cat! We were excited to think that a wild cat lived in this area, only to find out later that it was just a black vulture! Lacking a syrinx - the vocal organ of birds - the black vulture's only vocalizations are grunts or hisses.

SO exciting!! They're going to nest there!! If you're interested, I can send you a link to the year I discovered a vulture nest near my property.
The last comment about the vulture nest evidently will come from my daughter (just plain crazy), as she now has a google account. I didn't see that when I posted my comment. :)
justplaincrazy - by all means, send me nthe link!!! I think it's interesting to have vulture babies on the property!

We have a ton of black vultures and regular vultures (turkey vultures I guess)around here. We have a couple of eagles too. And of course there's the ...... geese! The goose population has thinned out a lot since the winter. They have spread themselves around I guess. ~ Black vultures are kind of neat looking. Like huge ravens! We had a vulture in our back yard checking out the enclosed mulch pile. But since we don't include any meat in it, he wasn't interested and flew off!

CeeCee - Did the vulture mama ever come back? I read that they nest in the same place year after year. The babies are so very cute! I hope we get babies! Did the mama mind you coming and photographing the chicks? I guess your presence didn't chase her away, as she was feeding the babies. What would you have done if you knew the mama wasn't feeding the chicks, would you have taken them in? thanks for the link! :)

oh that sounds like fun! i think i have buzzards...are they the same. mine have red heads. they come to the farm in march. one time i was on top of the hill and there was a flock of them. took lots of pic but never heard any hissing...maybe yours had a nest nearby? love this post!!1

No, momma never came back. I think she must have been hit by a car. The dead babies showed no signs of being attacked by predators. Momma never minded me taking pictures, as far as I could tell. I would get in, take the pics and then leave. I never lingered.
Yes, I would have taken them in, had I known momma had disappeared.

CeeCee & justplaincrazy - I had a "run in" with my black vulture parents yesterday!! I will ahve to post about it soon! They definitely have eggs in our barn!!! I am so excited!
