Chicks - Day 1

The chicks were born yesterday - there are 5 of them:
3 striped, one all black, one all yellow.  The black chick has black legs and beak!

I cannot believe these chicks came from my pullet's eggs.  My own chicks!
I can't wait to figure out which pullets and roosters are actually the parents of each chick!

Mama Zoner has accepted the chicks, but she is still sitting on 2 remaining eggs.  If the 2 eggs don't hatch by tomorrow, I guess we should to take them from her so Zoner can concentrate on raising the chicks and not sitting on eggs.

The babies are tired, I took this picture after 5pm.  Chicks need their nap time under mama's breast.

Chick bed time.

How adorable!! I don't think I have ever seen an all black chick! I vote that one as my favorite! Did you collect different eggs and put them all under Zoner?

Aunt Genny! Yes you are an Aunt! The babies are so cute and so very friendly! They all come running to me when I go out to the nursery in the coop.

Barb - Yes, we had an all black chick last year, her name is Betty. Betty was always one of my fav chicks because she was unique. And now she is beautiful. I believe the all black baby is from Betty and one of the dark roosters, Muffin or Brownie. I hope it's a pullet and not a cockerel so we can keep her!

Yes, we collected eggs from 10 different hens and put them under Zoner. We wanted a mix of eggs.

Too cute! It's like Christmas when you hatch eggs, whether you the incubator does it or the hen. It's so much fun. You have no clue what you're going to get. Just like Christmas.

Hooray! Chicken mommas are some of the very best.
The chicks are adorable. Nothing like a few peeps to make you smile.

Cute! I like the all black chick as well. Looks like Zoner made for a good broody hen. Definitely easier than an incubator. :)

Oh how cute! One of my Buff Orpingtons has gone broody and I've been taking the eggs away from her. It's so tempting to see if they hatch, but I'm not sure I want to expand my flock this year. Sooo cute.

Lisa - yes, it is like Christmas! It's exciting to see watch hatches!

CeeCee - I smile every time I watch the chicks!

Marla - Thanks!!

Lee - Yes, having a mama hen is so much easier than raising the chicks ourselves! All the work is done for us!

Anonymous - I wasn't sure I wanted to expand my flock either, but I'm happy we decided to have chciks now!

Knatolee - I am looking forward to see what the chicks look like when they get big!

Matt - Yes, Zoner is developing into a very protective and patient mother. She is a better mother hen than Bella. Bella's baby keets are always all over the place, wandering off with other chickens.
