Blizzard of 2010 4PM Feb 6, 2010

These pics were taken after 4pm today, Feb 6, 2010, during the blizzard of the century, according to the news.  The snowfall was winding down, just a few flakes were still coming down at this time.  You can see the snow is up to the base of the trees below.

Here's my car - at 11am I showed a pic of this car in the blog so you can compare the snowfall amounts.

Under this snow is our SUV.  Somewhere under there.

Below is a pic of one of our fields, with our old collapsed tobacco barn in the distance.

I'm still not sure how much snow we really got because of all the snow drifts.  At some places the snow was up to my waist.  At other places it was up to my thighs.  It was alot of snow for MD, that's for sure.

Of interest to me was the rabbit tracks I saw tonight around the chicken coop.  The chickens are secured inside their coop - they will not be going out into this deep snow for a couple days, at least.  But there were rabbit tracks in the snow all around the perimeter of the chicken coop and fenced-in area.  The rabbits are light and jump on top of the snow, leaving tracks behind.  My husband made a really secure fence around the chicken area ensuring that nothing could climb under or get out.  So, why on earth was a rabbit trying to get into the fenced area??

I walked around back of the chicken coop, cleared the impossibly high snow from around the gate so I could open the gate to enter the chicken pen, and then I saw it - a rabbit was locked inside the pen.  There were rabbit tracks in the snow all over inside the pen.  He was panicking, trying to escape, but couldn't get out.  I saw the scared rabbit under a tree in the snow.  He was a cottontail.  He must have been locked in the pen for at least a couple days.  We must have left the gate open before and he wandered in, then we returned and closed the gate while he was in the pen hiding from us.  Then a blizzard hit while he was captured.

The interesting thing to me is that the rabbits on the outside were running around the pen, trying to get to the rabbit on the inside.  Does that mean they cared about him?  Rabbits have feelings/thoughts?  Hmmm...

I made my way back into the house, got a carrot, returned to the fenced-in area behind the coop, and put the carrot under a tree.  When I left I made sure to leave the gate open behind me.  Good luck, little bunny.  I hope you get out before that red fox I saw in the back yard a couple days ago gets in.

That is a lot more snow than the last pics. Awww, poor bunny rabbit. His friends/family were trying so hard to get him out. Isn't it amazing how much animals actually do feel! Looking forward to more snow pics. Oh, before I forget, it is pretty easy to upload videos onto your blog. Just click on the video icon thingy next to the picture icon and it will ask you what video you want to upload. Hint, make sure it is a short video ( 30 seconds), otherwise it may not load onto your blog. Alright, looking forward to YOUR video now. Hey, if I can do it, anyone can! lol

Where in Maryland are you? (I got to you from a comment on Bumblebee Blog). Gorgeous farm! I'm in Souther MD - over a foot of snow here for sure, but I haven't measured yet.

Such a sad bunny story - so glad you were able to help him. Poor little guy.

And the cat post under this - we let our cats venture out on harnesses, too! They don't much mind, but it's hilarious and I feel like a crazy lady :)

My goodness, that is alot of snow!! I have never experienced that nor do I want to. The foot we had was more than I wanted.

That is so sweet, helping the rabbit. Maybe it was looking for something to eat. Much of their food sources are covered in all that snow.

As always...thank you for coming over to my blog.. I think you might have had more snow than us. Isn't it gorgeous? I am still trying to shovel and clean up outside. I love your new header..it has raspberries!! yippee!! The story of the rabbit was so sweet. and yes! I do think rabbits have feelings and hearts and would try to rescue one of their own trapped inside the fence. I hope mr. cottontail got out before mr. red fox got in! Have a great day!

Cindy - Yes, it is interesting to see wild animals like rabbits have feelings! I will try out that video thing soon. I tried it before, but for some reason, it just didn't work. Maybe my video was too long and the file was too big. Thanks for your help!

Jennah - A long time ago I used to live in Lexington Park, then moved to Lusby. I used to work on Pax back then. I miss that area!

Barb - No, I don't have snow shoes! I could use them now! :-)

Gail - Yes, I was wondering what rabbits eat when everything is covered in snow. I feel bad for the wild animals right now.

Jalynn - I thought of you when I put those raspberries in the header! I'm still not happy with the look of the header, but I just don't have time to deal with it anymore!

Quick update on the bunny - This morning I went out and saw the rabbit was no longer in the chicken pen. He made it out. But he did not eat the carrots I left for him.

And there were NO fox tracks anywhere around the area, in the chicken pen or around the outside of the pen, so I think the bunny made it out safely to his friends/family!

Your snow photos are amazing. Interesting about the rabbits! So glad he made it out okay; probably too scared to eat that carrot!

My goodness, that's a lotta snow!! Have you dug your SUV out yet? We made the mistake last year of letting the snow sit on our SUV - we wound up having about 3' of snow fall, so there was quite a bit on the car. Anyway, it totally busted the track and motor on our sun roof. We didn't realize it until a week after the snow was gone.

Love the bunny story!

By the way, the videos I include on my blog I upload through YouTube and they can be up to 10 minutes in length!! just fyi

That is an amazing amount of snow. No one goes to work do they when it snows that much? Guess it helps that it happened over the weekend.
