One Less Guinea Hen

We lost another guinea hen this morning.  She was chased by a wild animal and killed.  She died directly in front of our front door.  Following the crime scene investigation this morning, it was determined she was attacked in front of the chicken coop, she fought and ran, tried to hide under the chicken coop.  She was drug out from under the coop, got free from her attacker, and ran to our front door for help.  We were not there for her, and she died there.  If only I heard something and opened the door I could have saved her.  But I didn't.

From the door her body was drug into the woods and up a tree.  We assume it was a raccoon this time, because the animal climbed a tree.  A nest is up the tree in a hollow of the tree.  We assume baby raccoons are in that nest.

Poor girl.  It appears she did not die quickly, because of all the feathers around the yard.
We now have 2 female guineas and 4 male guineas.

Plus 25 guinea eggs due to hatch this weekend.

Oh the poor poor girl! I just hate to hear about those predators around there! I guess that's the natural way of life with the wild right next door. ~Hope the new chicks will cheer you all up a bit!

Poor baby, and how awful for you to find her feathers so close to you. That's so sad.

Can't wait to hear all about the new chicks, though. . . soon you'll have so many more to add to the flock.

Sorry to say, but if you don't get rid of the coons or securely pen the guineas you will lose them all. Once those are gone they will move on to the chickens.

Poor, poor girl, I am so sorry. I hate murder and I hate doing CSI but I always do. I do love raccoons but I think I might put aside my love and be wearing a coonskin cap for a bit. :)
I am so sorry. I think it is the door that gets to me.

I'm so sorry. The dogs went crazy about 3:30 this morning. I wonder if they were hearing the commotion.

Sorry you didn't hear and sorry you lost a hen.
My hearing is not the best so I probably wouldn't have heard either. :(

How tragic! I'm so sorry about your loss. Hopefully, your eggs will hatch and you will have so many wonderful, healthy keets...keep your chin up!

Oh no. :-(
So sorry, Lynn. How awful to be able to trace the steps and know how it all (slowly) unfolded, too.

Barb - yep, the new chicks made me happy on Thur. But on Fri morn I was crying again. Boy Guinea was killed Friday morning.

Kessie - The guineas love us and trust us. We give them treats, we are their friends.

CAGrammy - The keets are soooo cute!!!

John Gray - it's more than bad luck. There's a monster out there.

Matt - our chickens are in a very safe pen, nothing can get in or out. The guineas, on the other hand, freerange. I believe you are right, we have to hunt the hunter. It's sad, but we must take care of our own.

FarmGirl - We are making a plan to rid the area of foxes and coons. Sad it has to come down to this.

Cindy - maybe they heard it. Dogs have good ears. Did they hear anything on Fri morning? Another guinea attack happened.

LindaG - it makes me mad because I was awake at 4:30AM baking. I should have heard. I did hear a small amount of guinea noise, but ignored it because they always make so much noise. I've learned to ignore them. I wish I paid attention.

Aimee - Thank you! It's tough to keep my chin up when my pets are being killed.

Danni - Thanks. It was terrifying for the poor guinea. It breaks my heart.

Gail - Thank you! We do have 12 beautiful keets! :)

Julie - Thanks!

Robin - I know. I'm so mad!

VT - Thanks. The keets are adorable. I'm glad we got so many!
