Jack and the George

Why is it that cats love to eat bugs?

We get these ugly bugs in the house at certain times of the year - they are called camel crickets.  Even though we exterminate, we can't get all the bugs out of this old house.  When I saw my first camel cricket in the house, I had no idea what it was.  I named it George, and asked Randy to please remove George from the house.  Then we got a few more Georges in the house, and we looked them up online to see what we were dealing with.

The cats love to eat Georges.  Usually they pull off their pokey back legs and eat the cricket body, leaving the legs on the floor.  Recently the cats haven't been too picky, they've been eating the cricket, legs and all.

Here's Jack going for George.

All gone! Yum!  It must be like a crunchy potato chip to the cat.  I don't know how he eats those long antenna!

George must have been pretty tasty as I see Jack licking his lips! Good source of protein!

Our cats do the same thing, in fact they destroy a lot of fragile things romping after whatever bug catches their fancy.

The whole place would probably be destroyed if a mouse ever got in here.

Is my Mimi the only cat who won't eat bugs? I bring them in for her and point them out. I don't think she knows what to do with them. She sniffs them and then loses interest. Maybe I should try a camel cricket! She might be more interested if it moved a lot. She does love her toys and picks them up in her mouth and throws them around.

Julie - Yep, good protien for the kitties!

Chai Chai - every now & then in the winter a mouse gets into our old house to escape the cold outside. The cats go crazy! They somehow hear it days before they catch it, they hunt by staring at the wall vents or where ever they heard it, and they don't move a muscle for days, except they run to go eat, then run back to the hunting position. When the mouse nakes an appearance, they have it in a flash. Right now Shad is hunting by an AC vent in our guest room - she must have heard something, it may be a bug or her imagination, who knows; she's been hunting there for days. Silly cats.

Lisa - I hate earwigs, they pinch!

John Gray - Lol! You are too funny!

Genny - Thats funny that Mimi doesnt like bugs! The camel crickets hop in all directions, they really keep the cat's attention!

Robin - Jack thinks crickets taste good. I guess the dry cat food gets boring after a while!

That is so funny. :) Have a few cats here that will eat just about anything that moves. Had one cat actually eat a small frog! You can bet that cat has never eaten another one!

Cindy - Jack's fav thing is lizards! He pulls off their tales and eats them. Most of the time the lizard escapes tail-less while Jack is distracted with eating the tail. I think lizard tails must be very tasty to cats!
